The Lie of False Belonging

The third temptation in this study is “false belonging” or the temptation to believe “I am what others think.” We all have a desire to belong, but often that drives us to seek the approval of others, to please people rather than listing the only voice and the only opinion that matters. The invitation of Jesus is to find your identity and value in him – not what others think!

From Series: "Temptation"

Our truest identity and greatest source of strength rests in being God’s children whom He loves. The enemy of our souls uses three primary temptations to pull us away from abiding in the love of Christ. These temptations come up repeatedly in the biblical record, from the serpent’s lies to Eve in Genesis 3 to the Apostle John’s first letter to the church, which refers to the three “things that are in the world.” They show up most vividly, however, in the story of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness. These temptations are ways we grasp for things we were created to enjoy in our relationship with God, but lost in the fall: Security, Belonging, and Significance.
