In Matthew 22:15-22, the Pharisees try to trap Jesus with a question about paying taxes to Caesar. Jesus responds wisely, saying, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." This brief but profound answer challenges us to consider where our true allegiance lies—balancing our responsibilities in the world while giving our ultimate devotion to God. In the third message in our Politics of Jesus series, we'll reflect on what rightfully belongs to Caesar and what ultimately belongs to God – and what happens when our loyalties clash.
Looking at the example Jesus gave us, we will study how we can navigate both relationships and the political landscape with humility and hope, while loving others well and remaining true to our faith in Jesus Christ. Key principles taught by Jesus can equip us to better listen and engage with both our relationships, and in the political life of our community and nation.
