Often in Scripture there is an Old Testament character or story that is paralleled in the New Testament. Such is the case in the stories of 2 different widows. Both of them teach us about sacrificial giving. Both had given out of their need and all they had to live on. Both were highly commended for their sacrificial generosity. The one in the New Testament is where Jesus observed what she gave and highly commended her and used it as a teachable moment for the disciples. The other one in the Old Testament is the widow that gave the little bit of oil and flour that she had left to Elijah because God had asked her to. She did, and in her generosity God did a miracle in replenishing her bowl of flour and jar of oil until the famine in the land was over. What we learn from both widows is the invitation to trust God. To do as He leads in being willing to give whatever He asks, knowing and trusting that He is more than able to meet our every need.
We as a Church are beginning a 6 week message series called IN. This series kicks off a 2 year discipleship journey that we are calling the [IN] Initiative. The 4 reasons for this Initiative are: 1) To become more like Jesus, 2) To accelerate living out our vision and mission, 3) To grow in our generosity, and 4) To increase local and global impact.
