This week we study John 15 when Jesus said He is the Vine and we are the branches coming off of Him. In this description of who He is, Jesus tells us that He wants us to make our home in Him – to abide in Him. He tells us we do this by letting His Word live in us, obeying His commands, and asking the Father for whatever we need to live as Jesus lived. When we abide in Him, we will bear fruit. The fruits those in Christ bear is the fruit of love for one another and that love leads us to fulfill the Great Commission by making disciples that will also abide in Jesus. Jesus also warns that those who do not abide in Him will someday be cut off from their chance to belong to Christ and will face an eternity in Hell. He tells that the fruit of our lives – what comes out of us – will prove whether we are His disciple or not. A lack of abiding in Christ, a lack of fruit, and a lack of Christ-like love for others indicate which are the dead branches. Thankfully Jesus came to resurrect the spiritually dead and bring the willing back to life, sparing those who will abide in Jesus from a life of fruitlessness and an eternity in Hell. Those who remain in Him will have eternal joy and friendship with Jesus!
